Original photo and digital additives (initials on the lower right side and very light watercolor effect) by CRS. Phalaenopsis is a genus of approximately 60 species of orchids (family Orchidaceae). The abbreviation in the horticultural trade is Phal. The generic name originates from the Greek phalaina, "moth" and opsis, "like", descriptive of the inflorescences of some species, which resemble moths in flight. For this reason, the species are sometimes called Moth orchids.

Jurassica Encephalartos Natalensis
4cb2e296-fa36-47a3-99e4-0acc1f8317a9
Encephalartos Natalensis (or Natal Cycad) is a plant native to South Africa, Cycads are one of the oldest family of plants on the planet! They are often called palms (such as the "Sago Palm" which is also a Cycad) but they aren't actually palms at all. Cycads were around for aslong as possibly 100million uears ago. They are related to Conifers and this type can reach up to 20feet in height! This photo is a male Natal, male Cycads grow these cone-like parts in their center. In some places the seeds of Cycads are eaten, fresh or roasted and also ground into a powder and added to miso soup. Currently the most popular of these plants in the US is Cycas revoluta, the Sago Palm. Photo taken in North San Diego County
Snowflake Viburnum

Vanilla Beans

This photograph is of some fresh Vanilla Beans growing around tropical plants and palm trees. Vanilla is actually a type of orchid and is green while growing but the Vanilla you buy in the stores (the bean style) is dried and brown. Sadly there were no flowers on this plant, I would have liked to see that.
Colors of Paradise

Photo of this Bird of Paradise flower taken in Oceanside, Ca. by CRS. My favorite part is the leaf running from the lower left to the upper right behind the flower, if you look closely while zoomed you can see the sun shining through all the viens in the leaf, it's really neat.
Foxglove Chorus

This photo of Foxglove flower stalks was taken in Oceanside, Ca. by CRS. Cream, Lavandar and Green are the main colors of the photo but there is also a rich Burgandy color from the spots in the throats of the blooms.

Projekt Dog, dog breed art from BarkArt

Posted in Animals & Pets, DesignersDen at 10:10 am by CRS

Projekt Dog is a really neat design set from Chicago artist Julie W. Farrell, her shop BarkArt is one of the most original “pet shops” I’ve seen on Cafepress (and I look A Lot). Tons of awesome dog breed specific illustrations (allthough in my opinion she could have more doxie designs. hehe), she also has a neat set of “Year of the Dog” designs, it’s year of the pig now but you can always celebrate the year of the dog!
In the Projekt Dog department she invites you to email her if you don’t see your desired dog breed, I’ve linked her email address below (click on the Projekt Dog banner image).
Projekt Dog Designs
About this design she says “Many different dog breed designs done in a unique and urban way. Showcases the akc breeds and their classic personalities. From the French Bulldog to the Labrador Retriever, you will find a dog design you will love!”

Each design has extra versions also, like “Greyhound Mom” and “Greyhound Dad”, I’ve found that breed specific parent designs draw a lot of attention, dogs tend to make their parents proud.
Check it out and if you want, feel free to post a comment here about what you think of these awesome dog illustrations. I just thought you might like to see them :)

Celtic Heart Knots w/ Native American names

Posted in DesignersDen at 6:53 pm by CRS

Five awesome celtic knotwork hearts by JamieCo Design, each has a Native American name meaning “heart”.
Adanvdo = Cherokee for “heart”, Bijii = Apache for “heart”, Chante = Lakhota for “heart”, Chonoska = Creek for “heart” and last but not least is Hesta which is Cheyenne for “heart”.
My favorite happens to be Bijii, but I have a thing for red so I also really like Chante :)
Jamie’s description for his oh-so-snazzy set of designs is “For those whose love so deeply entangles the small roots of their hearts that even the strongest wind that blows shall not separate them (thus a traveler described “Indian courtship” in Canada during the eighteenth century). In that spirit of interconnection, these Celtic knots’ names are Native American words for heart” and I really appreciate the designs and am glad that he has them out in the world.
Seeing as though it’s almost Valentine’s Day I thought these would be a fitting post.
You can also find these hearts as Mac compatable icons here Warrior~Poet (as well as a ton of other awesome icons and wallpapers.
